Starbucks shops across the U.S. closed early on Tuesday to hold training for employees on recognizing hidden prejudices. It was part of the coffee chain’s effort to deal with the outcry over the arrest of two black men last month for sitting in a Philadelphia Starbucks without buying anything. After the incident, the company’s leaders apologized, met with the men and scheduled an afternoon of training for 175,000 employees at more than 8,000 U.S. stores. Developed with help from the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and other groups, the training was not mandatory, but Starbucks said it expected almost all of its employees to participate. The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Planned Parenthood’s request to challenge a new Arkansas law that strengthens health protections for women undergoing medication abortions. The 2015 Arkansas law requires any abortion provider who performs medication-induced abortions (the most common abortion procedure used in the first trimester) to have a signed agreement with a physician who has admitting privileges to a local hospital that can handle any complications from the procedure. The regulation is set to take effect in July. The law is similar to a Texas regulation that was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2016. Two people were killed as subtropical storm Alberto’s powerful wind gusts and heavy rains tore across the Gulf of Mexico coast and swamped the Southeast, officials and forecasters said Monday. Alberto, the first named storm of the hurricane season, made landfall on Florida’s Panhandle on Monday afternoon. In Polk County, two people were killed when a tree fell on a vehicle. The driver and passenger died, according to State Trooper Rico Stephens. Polk County warned residents on its Facebook page that the area where the incident occurred had become dangerous, and more flash flooding was possible through Wednesday. After more than a century, the Boy Scouts of America announced in October that this year it would begin letting girls join the 7- to 10-year-old Cub Scouts. President Donald Trump on Thursday canceled the planned summitwith North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which was set to take place June 12 in Singapore. Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and a White House senior adviser, has received a permanent security clearance. Kushner operated with an interim security clearance for more than a year inside the administration, giving him access to highly classified information while he underwent an FBI background check. A federal judge ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump may not block people on Twitter over the political views they share on social media.  Siding with the Knight First Amendment Institute in a lawsuit against Trump and his communications team, U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in New York concluded that blocking people on Twitter violated their First Amendment rights. Trump was engaging in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination by blocking critics in a “public forum,” the court ruled. “We hold that portions of the @realDonaldTrump account ― the ‘interactive space’ where Twitter users may directly engage with the content of the President’s tweets ― are properly analyzed under the ‘public forum’ doctrines set forth by the Supreme Court,” Buchwald said in her ruling. Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams won the Democratic primary Tuesday, bringing her closer to becoming the nation’s first African-American woman governor. Five women filed lawsuits on Monday against the University of Southern California, alleging the school’s former gynecologist had sexually abused them during medical examinations and that the university failed to protect students. A student and adult chaperone are dead after a full-size school bus collided with a dump truck on a major New Jersey highway Thursday, an accident that ripped the undercarriage completely off the bus and left it demolished on its side in the median. The bus came from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, a public school serving roughly 650 students in grades 5-8.  New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said at a news conference from the middle school that seven adults, including the driver, and 38 5th grade students were on board the bus. Apart from the two who died, everyone was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Some patients are in critical condition and undergoing surgery, Murphy also said. Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit before dawn Thursday, shooting dusty ash about 30,000 feet into the sky. Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, said the explosion came at about 6 a.m. local time, after two weeks of volcanic activity and the opening of more than a dozen fissures east of the crater that spewed lava into neighborhoods. President Trump’s financial disclosure were released on Wednesday, and they revealed for the first time that he paid more than $100,000 to his personal attorney, Michael D. Cohen, as reimbursement for payment to a third-party. Released by the Office of Government Ethics, the disclosure did not specify the purpose of the payment. Michigan State University on Wednesday announced a $500 million settlement with more than 300 women and girls who said they were assaulted by sports doctor Larry Nassar. Michigan State and lawyers for 332 victims announced the deal after negotiating privately with the help of a mediator. Under the agreement, $425 million would be paid to current claimants and $75 million would be set aside for any future claims. The statement doesn’t indicate how much money each victim would receive. The Supreme Court on Monday gave its go-ahead for states to allow gambling on sports across the nation, striking down a federal law that barred betting on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states. The justices voted 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, a 1992 law that forbade state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. Israeli troops shot dead dozens of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday as the United States opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, a move that has fueled Palestinian anger and drawn foreign criticism for undermining peace efforts. The Pentagon says three Americans released by North Korea have left a Washington-area hospital and have reunited with their families. A new fissure opened early Sunday on Hawaii’s Big Island, splattering lava tens of feet into the air and forcing more residents to evacuate. The fissure is several hundred yards long and is the 17th crack in the ground to open on the island in the week since the Kilauea volcano erupted on May 3. Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the volcano erupted May 3, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant. The latest outbreak of the E. Coli virus is linked to romaine lettuce and according to new reports, it has spread to four additional states. Tainted romaine lettuce that is linked to a new outbreak of E. Coli reportedly originated in Yuma, Arizona according to CNN. Earlier this week, the CDC announced that Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota and Texas are the latest states to report E. Coli related illnesses after eating the contaminated lettuce. This brings the new total to 29 cases. The CDC gives a list of symptoms to look out for if you have recently eaten romaine lettuce – they include: severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. The recovery period for those who have been affected is roughly five to seven days. North Korea has freed three US citizens from prison, according to a tweet from US President Donald Trump. It is viewed as a goodwill gesture ahead of a historic summit between Mr Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey won the Republican U.S. Senate nomination in West Virginia on Tuesday, beating former coal executive Don Blankenship amid much controversy.  Morrisey will now face Democratic Senator Joe Manchin in one of the top Senate races of November’s midterm elections. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday the U.S. will pull out of the landmark nuclear accord with Iran. In a speech before law-enforcement officials in Arizona on Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the federal government seeks to separate parents from their children at the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to discourage more crossings. The Los Angeles Times reports that the policy officially went into effect last week, though hundreds of children have already been taken from their parents in recent months. “If you are smuggling a child, then we will prosecute you and that child will be separated from you as required by law.” Sessions said.  Under the new system, children will be treated as if they arrived in the United States alone. If they are from a country other than Mexico or Canada, they are placed with a family member or in a shelter while their case is considered. The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano jumped to 21 Sunday as scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet into the air. Some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated were prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time. Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where molten rock, toxic gas and steam have been bursting through openings in the ground created by the volcano. An Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane on a training mission crashed Wednesday along a road near a Georgia airport, killing at least five National Guard members from Puerto Rico, authorities said. The plane appeared to have crashed into a median on the road, where firefighters later put out the blaze. Capt. Jeff Bezore, a spokesman for the Georgia Air National Guard’s 165th Air Wing, said the crash killed at least five people. On Monday, adult film star Stormy Daniels filed another lawsuit against President Trump, accusing him of defaming her by dismissing as a “con job” her claim that she was threatened in 2011 after giving an interview about their alleged affair. U.S. President Donald Trump’s physician Ronny Jackson on Thursday withdrew from consideration to head the Veterans Affairs department after allegations that he had been lax with prescription drugs and drank alcohol on the job. Jackson, 50, was a surprising pick for the job, and even Trump acknowledged he lacked experience running large organizations. According to multiple sources, police have arrested a former police officer who is suspected of being the “Golden State Killer,” one of California’s most famous serial killers and rapists. Local and federal task force apprehended the suspect late Tuesday evening. The “Golden State Killer” is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 people and committed multiple home burglaries in the 1970s and 1980s in crime sprees throughout California. Two officers from the Dallas police department and a civilian were injured in a shooting near a local Home Depot on Tuesday, according to reports. The shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. as officers were escorting a man from the Home Depot in northern Dallas. The two officers and the store loss-prevention officer underwent surgery for their injuries, Police Chief U. Renee Hall said late Tuesday night.  Police arrested Armando Luis Juarez, 29, on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and felony theft. According to sources, President Donald Trump plans to nominate Admiral Harry Harris, commander of Pacific Command, to be the ambassador to South Korea.  Harris had originally been the president’s pick for ambassador to Australia. His confirmation hearing for that post was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but it was postponed. He was widely expected to be confirmed. Ten people were killed and 15 others injured after a white van collided with a crowd of pedestrians on a busy street north of downtown Toronto, Canada, on Monday,  The suspect was identified as Alex Minassian, 25, according to Toronto Police media representative Gary Long. Stephen Powell, district chief for Toronto Fire, confirmed that there had been multiple fatalities. Four people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting at a Waffle House in Tennessee early Sunday, authorities said. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said they were drafting an arrest warrant for Travis Reinking, 29, of Morton, Illinois, who was still at large. The shooting took place at the Waffle House located at 3571 Murfreesboro Pike in Antioch. Metro Nashville Police Department said witnesses told them that Reinking drove his pickup truck into the Waffle House parking lot around 3 a.m. local time. They said Reinking exited his truck and began firing AR-15 at two people outside the restaurant. He then went inside the restaurant and opened fire. The Justice Department’s inspector general has asked Federal Prosecutors in Washington to determine whether the FBI’s former deputy director, Andrew McCabe, should be charged for allegedly “lacking candor” on multiple occasions with internal investigators, and with then-FBI director James Comey.  Inspector General Michael Horowitz concluded that McCabe repeatedly misled investigators looking into how sensitive investigative information ended up on in a national newspaper in the weeks before the 2016 presidential election. An island-wide blackout hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday as the island struggles to repair an increasingly unstable power grid, just seven months after Hurricane Maria. Officials said an excavator accidentally downed a transmission line. Officials said it could take 24 to 36 hours to fully restore power to more than 1.4 million customers as outrage grew across the island about the state of Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority. It is the second major outage in less than a week, with the previous one affecting some 840,000 customers. The Southwest Airlines pilot who made an emergency landing Tuesday after the jet blew an engine and lost a window at 32,000 feet was one of the first female pilots to fly with the U.S. Navy. Tammie Jo Shults, 56, was calm as she navigated the damaged Dallas-bound jet, Flight 1380, to an emergency landing in Philadelphia. The twin-engine Boeing 737 that left New York’s LaGuardia Airport had 143 customers and five crew on board. One passenger died and 7 others were injured. Jennifer Riordan, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was identified as the woman who died. Riordan was the mother of two and a Wells Fargo bank executive. Shults took the plane into a rapid descent as passengers employed oxygen masks and braced for impact.
