Benton Harbor Schools Superintendent Dr. Shelly Walker is working on a plan to merge the district with the Dream Academy, now that the latter has lost its charter. More than 200 students attend the Dream Academy, and with the school shutting down, Walker says Benton Harbor Area Schools could take them in. They’d be kept together in one building, and Walker says the logistics are still being worked out.

“Those are details that are being looked at at this moment to determine how we could best merge the two entities for the good of the children,” Walker told WSJM.

Walker says Benton Harbor Schools stands to gain 200-plus students if the plan comes together.

“It would benefit Benton Harbor, absolutely, due to an increase in enrollment for our district, and we desperately need that,” Walker said.

In addition, Walker says the arrangement would help the Dream Academy kids stay with their classmates, and allow their teachers new opportunities for professional development. She doesn’t yet have a timetable for making the plan work, but says the sooner, the better.
