The Cook nuclear power plant in Bridgman has shut down its Unit 2 reactor due to a rupture in a moisture separator reheater. The problem occurred after midnight Wednesday. Cook plant spokesperson Bill Schalk says the rupture led to the release of non-radioactive steam.

“It was a release of a lot of steam and a lot of high temperature steam that could have been a problem,” Schalk told WSJM. “Fortunately, as well, it released outside into the atmosphere rather than into the turbine building.”

Schalk says no one was injured, although the steam did damage one wall to a building. Unit 2 is now offline while Cook plant crews and the NRC determine exactly what happened. Unit 1 is still operating at full capacity. Schalk says there’s no estimate for getting the unit back online, adding customers will not be affected.
