The U.S. House has approved legislation designed to improve care for mental illness in the United States. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, backed by Congressman Fred Upton, is designed to ensure the federal government funds evidence-based programs and remove barriers to care. Speaking on the House floor Wednesday, Upton said the plan could help millions.

“This bipartisan bill will save lives,” Upton said. “It will aid families, and provide comfort and relief to those who are struggling.”

Upton said the legislation is the most significant reform to the nation’s mental health programs in decades. The plan passed Upton’s Energy and Commerce Committee on a 53 to 0 vote last month. The House approved it Wednesday on a 422 to 2 vote.
