South Haven city leaders are reviewing their options following Sunday’s disturbance at North Beach. The beach was evacuated prior to the annual Light Up the Lake fireworks show.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, Acting Police Chief Natalie Thompson said the move was needed to ensure safety. She’s now consulting with the public and Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey about how to handle next year.

Meanwhile, South Haven Mayor Bob Burr said he thought the police handled Sunday’s incident properly.

“The behavior was atrocious at that point in time, and it was mainly people from outside of town,” Burr said.

Some fights broke out in the crowd at North Beach, and glass bottles were being thrown around. Some have called for the fireworks show to be cancelled next year, and Mayor Burr says there’s plenty of time to talk about that.
