Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey says Monday was a dark day for the community, with two court bailiffs killed by a jail inmate. He’s asking for the public’s support.

“Our hearts are torn apart,” Bailey said. “They were our friends, they were my colleagues. I knew them for over 30 years. So, it’s a sad day.”

Bailey spoke about the tragedy at a press conference with Governor Rick Snyder by his side. Snyder said he just wanted to show his support, and called on all Michiganders to do the same.

“We should all be standing together to say, ‘How do we support one another, and how do we work to make sure these things don’t happen,’” Snyder said.

Bailey said counselors will be on hand for those affected by the shootings. Prayer vigils for the victims were held Monday evening by multiple local churches.
