Thousands of volunteers will be hitting Michigan roadways this weekend to pick up trash as part of the Adopt A Highway program. More than 3,000 groups take part each year, and the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Nick Schirripa says they make a big difference.

“Annually, we get about 70,000 bags, and that generates roughly $5 million in value for Michigan taxpayers,” Schirripa said. “So, there is an economic impact here.”

The volunteers begin their week of cleanups this Saturday, and the cleanup runs through July 24. Schirripa asks drivers to be cautious around the volunteers, who will be wearing brightly-colored vests. The next Adopt a Highway cleanup will be in September.
