Money has been raised to buy gifts for children in Berrien County’s foster care system, thanks to an event held Tuesday at Slumberland Furniture in Benton Township. “Christmas in August” featured games, a dunk tank, a bounce house, and food and refreshments. Heather Hoffman, with the Berrien County Department of Health and Human Services, says the money goes to its Operation Good Cheer program.

“It’s a Christmas program that we use to help buy gifts for all the kids in foster care in Berrien County,” Hoffman told WSJM. “So, we’re just asking for donations. $30 gets a kid $150 worth of gifts.”

Hoffman says there are about 350 kids in foster care in Berrien County, and they could all use a better Christmas this year. Anyone who wants to donate to Operation Good Cheer can do so by calling the Berrien County Department of Health and Human Services at 934-2272, or by e-mailing HoffmanH@Michigan.gov.
