A planned renovation project for the Berrien County Jail is expected to keep the facility up and running for another three decades. Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey tells WSJM News the county commission has given the green light to seeking bids for the work which will expand the intake area and add other improvements.

“It’s going to give us a triage down in the receiving area for medical, it’s going to give us a couple of padded cells, it’s going to give us three interview rooms for officers and defense attorneys,” Bailey said. “So, the new things that we’re going to be able to add on will make the operations a lot safer and a lot more convenient.”

Bailey says he’s excited to see the project get approval, as he’s been looking at possible jail improvements since 2001. The work could begin as soon as January, and Bailey hopes to see it finished within a year and a half.
