Bill Targets Companies That Leave Michigan When Tax Breaks Expire

A Kalamazoo state Representative is proposing legislation which he says will keep more new-ly relocated businesses in Michigan. Democratic Representative Jon Hoadley’s plan would require companies getting special tax credits for moving here to pay the money back if they move out again when the credits expire.

“If you get Michigan tax credits to keep your company here or move them, then if you try to then pack up and move right near the end of those tax credits, we get that back,” Hoadley said.

Hoadley calls it a Michigan jobs first agenda. He’s also introduced a bill to end tax credits for Michigan companies that ship jobs elsewhere. Hoadley hopes the House will consider a vote after the November election.
