Hunters will be out with their bow and arrows for the start of archery deer season in Michigan on Saturday. Chad Stewart is a deer management specialist with the state Department of Natural Resources and admits it’s not as big of a deal as firearms deer season, which start November 15. Still, he says bow hunters harvested more than 110,000 deer last year, and says “it’s a huge recreational opportunity for our hunters.”
“Where a hunter hunts and their success will be dictated on how much effort they put in going into the season, so how much knowledge they have on the local deer herd movement, and what they’re seeing in finding the best spot to be successful,” and Stewart adds it’s up to the individual hunters to make the deer season “what it can be.”
Stewart expects a good season. He says there have been a lot of does and fawns spotted along with bucks in the Lower Peninsula, and the deer population is slowly starting to rebound in the Upper Peninula. Bow season ends November 14th, and starts again on December 1.
