Community leaders in Benton Harbor are urging everyone to sit back and allow the investigation to be completed into the fatal shooting of a man by the department of public safety Tuesday. It happened in the early morning hours outside a home on Pavone when officers say the man fired shots at them while they were responding to a call. Neighbors have identified the man as 28-year-old Darius Wimberly. At a Tuesday afternoon  press conference, Mayor Marcus Muhammad said everyone should stay calm and not let anger govern their actions.

“Dangerous situations can come out of the emotion of anger when it’s not checked by sound doctrine and intelligence,” Muhammad said.

Muhammad was joined by a coalition of city officials and church leaders, who said they’ll be out and about in the community to work with frustrated residents. Among them was the Reverend Maurice McAfee.

“We will continue to go back into the streets well into tonight,” McAfee said. “We will not let this deter our city, we will not let this divide our city, and we will not let this tear our city up.”

Mayor Muhammad offered his condolences to the family of the man who was shot, and asked they be given privacy. The department of public safety has police body camera footage of the shooting, but it’s not yet been released.
