“The Simpsons” have been renewed by Fox for a 29th and 30th season. The show is currently in the middle of its 28th season.

Next season, “The Simpsons” will pass the record 635-episode run of the western drama “Gunsmoke” to become the longest-running scripted series in U.S. TV history. By the end of the 30th season, “The Simpsons” will reach 669 episodes.

Homer Simpson released a statement saying, “Take that Gunsmoke! You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!”

James (Jim) Brooks, the executive producer, recently spoke about the possibility of making a second movie:

Fox very much wants us to do another one, and maybe we will and maybe we won’t – that’s where it is. How do we divide our labors, and do we believe in the idea we have? We may go into a more active exploration of a second movie soon.
