New questions have been raised about the presidential election count. So, could there really be a recount in Michigan? J Alex Halderman at the University of Michigan Center for Computer Security is among those raising the alarm about possible tampering here and in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Chris Thomas, of the Michigan Department of Elections, casts doubt on any fraud here, though.
“Some of the allegations were concerning states that have electronic voting systems, the touch screen systems,” Thomas said. “We don’t have that here. We’re 100% optical scan, it’s got a paper ballot, and they can be hand counted. So, there’s really no indication whatsoever that the system itself would be accessible to any kind of fraud”
Thomas estimates the cost of a recount at $240,000. It would be paid for by the candidate’s campaign.
