The U.S. House Appropriations Committee has introduced legislation fully funding the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative at $300 million. Michigan Congressman John Moolenaar is on the Committee and spoke with Michigan News Network about the plan.

“It’s the start of a process where it will go through subcommittee and then the full committee in the days ahead, and we’re excited that the bipartisan advocacy that we’re doing has been paying off,” Molinaar said.

The money for the GLRI was zeroed out of the budget proposed by President Trump. A bipartisan group of lawmakers from Great Lakes states immediately hit back to get the funding restored. It pays for a slew of environmental programs, including protecting the lakes from Asian carp.
