The Michigan Department of Transportation is asking drivers to be extra careful during Monday’s total solar eclipse. Spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the agency is concerned about people pulling over along the sides of roads to gawk.

“It’s a very rare astronomical event, obviously,” Schirripa said. “It only occurs on any one given spot on the planet every 375 years. We get it’s a big deal and I think most folks are going to try to catch a glimpse of it at some point. However, during that two and a half to three minute event, we just need to remind people that parking along roads poses a risk.”

Schirripa asks everyone to pull into a parking lot or rest area if they’re going to watch the eclipse. He also reminds everyone to wear protective glasses. Looking into the sun, even during an eclipse, is dangerous for your eyes.
