The Berrien County Board of Commissioners wants to meet with the county road commission to get further information before moving forward with any possible takeover. At a meeting Thursday, the commission heard a draft resolution from Berrien County Administrator Bill Wolf for the takeover of the roads body. Wolf’s plan would create a county road department. Some commissioners balked at allowing Wolf to appoint the acting director without more commission input. They want a workshop with the road commissioners. County Chair Jon Hinkelman told WSJM News prudence makes sense.

“It’s a very, very difficult decision, and they want to make sure that they’re doing it right and that they’re doing it correctly, and that they have all of the information they need to make a good, correct decision,” Hinkelman said.

Road Commissioner Jess Minks told us he’d like to talk to the county commission more in depth.

“I’m satisfied,” Minks said. “I appreciate the board. I appreciate they way they’re working on this trying to get it resolved.”

Minks told us the road commission has never had a proper chance to talk to the county commission. He said he wants to know more about the problems the county commission has been discussing. In addition to a workshop with the county roads commission, the county commission wants information on the roads body’s current policies. The county board’s workshop with the road commission could be this month.
