The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced $880,000 in grants to Native American tribes around the country to improve housing conditions and stimulate development. Among the recipients in this latest round of grants is the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi in Dowagiac, receiving $280,000. The awards are part of HUD’s Indian Community Development Block Grant Program, which is a national program that supports community development and affordable housing. It could include new housing developments, or upgrades to existing housing. Specifically, the Pokagons are going to use their grant to fund construction of waterlines and a well system for a housing development. The water line will also provide new service to the Rodgers Lake Campus near Dowagiac.
