The heavy rain over the weekend has resulted in a sanitary sewer overflow into the Black River in South Haven. The city’s department of public works says between 10,000 and 13,000 gallons of diluted wastewater overflowed into the storm drain and then the river. The situation is being monitored by city staff, and reports will be filed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Van Buren County Health Department. South Haven is currently building new interceptor sewers, a new main pump station, and an equalization basin to address the overflows that happen on occasion on Dunkley Avenue, some 300 feet north of Dyckman Avenue and upstream from the Main Lift Station.
