The city of South Haven says approximately 70,000 gallons of wastewater flowed into a storm drain and the Black River this week due to heavy rain. The sanitary sewer overflow began Tuesday morning and was over by about 10:30 p.m. the same day. The overflow occurred because the city’s wastewater collection system couldn’t handle the deluge of water that hit it due to the weather. The city tells us staff continue to monitor the situation and will file reports with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The city is currently constructing new interceptor sewers, a new main pump station, and an equalization basin to address these kinds of situations. That $11 million project is expected to be largely finished by the end of the year.
