State House Speaker Defends Auto Insurance Reform Plan

After a House committee last week passed a package of bills to reform auto-insurance in Michigan, critics say the proposal goes too far in slashing coverage guaranteed for catastrophically injured drivers. Speaker of the House Tom Leonard addressed those complaints in a conversation with Michigan News Network.

“This is an issue that has continued to be a moving target,” Leonard said. “I believe there are individuals that want to maintain the status quo. They like this rigged system for some reason. They’re going to continue to move that goal post. We just need to ensure that we’re going to move it far enough so that we can get the 55 votes that we need.”

The Lansing-area Republican, along with Democratic Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, back the package which would end the state’s mandate requiring no-fault auto insurance policies. They say the plan will give drivers an option of three coverage plans.
