Bill Would Penalize Schools With Racially Insensitive Mascots

A fight is brewing in Lansing over proposed legislation which would put schools at risk of financial penalty if their mascot or slogan is deemed racially insensitive. State Representative Beau LaFave told Michigan News Network he’s not a fan. He called the bill a weak attempt at forcing political correctness.

“There is absolutely no reason to take money away from hard-working teachers and school districts in the Upper Peninsula because of some PC nonsense,” LaFave said.

The Iron Mountain Republican has announced he’ll fight a bill. It was recently introduced by Detroit Democrat Ian Conyers. It’s still in the committee stage.
