Now that the freezing weather is here, utilities around Michigan are reminding residents how they can keep themselves safe and also maybe save a little on their home heating bills. Consumers Energy’s Brian Wheeler tells WSJM News you’ve got to protect yourself against carbon monoxide in the winter.

“MAke sure you keep your meters and keep the intake pipes to your furnace clear of ice and snow,” Wheeler said. “That can certainly cause problems.”

If you want to save a bundle, make sure your home is properly secured against the cold air outside.

“If you’ve got any cracks around your home’s windows or doors, you’re letting cold air inside and warm air out,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler tells us you can call 211 to learn about home heating assistance if you’re struggling this year. Another thing to do is call your gas or electric provider and ask about payment plans. Consumers Energy has one. Make sure you call for help sooner rather than later.
