Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski has scheduled three meetings for next month to help property owners who are behind on their taxes avoid foreclosure. He tells us there are about 1,200 property owners in Berrien County right now in danger, and notes his office’s payment plans have a success rate of 93%. Witkowski tells WSJM News he wants to get people signed up for them because of a recent change in state rules for foreclosures.

“Last year, the rules changes from the Court of Appeals,” Whitkowski said. “If you get foreclosed on, you used to be able to go to court after the foreclosure date and if the judge would allow you to pay, you could Those days are gone. The Court of Appeals struck that down.”

Witkowski will hold meetings next month in Benton Harbor, Berrien Springs, and Niles for folks to get signed up for payment plans. Bring along your parcel number if you have it. Witkowski’s office plans to send notices next week to those who are still behind on their 2015 taxes. It’s those owners who are looking at foreclosures this spring.
