The Michigan Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education this week kicked off a series of meetings to discuss sexual misconduct policies at Michigan’s public universities and whether changes need to be made to better protect students. State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker, the co-chair of the committee, tells WSJM News the recent Larry Nassar debacle has got lawmakers setting their attention on the state’s universities.

“We want to make sure that they are doing all of the safeguards and all of the protocols to make sure that they are keeping their campuses safe,” Schuitmaker said.

Wednesday’s committee meeting featured a presentation by representatives from Western Michigan University on Title 9 compliance and necessary measures schools must take to keep students safe. Schuitmaker says lawmakers want to know if any universities, in particular, MSU, violated Title 9 requirements. More meetings will be happening in the coming weeks with testimony from MSU officials in March.
