State Senator John Proos is praising school security money approved this week by a Senate committee. He tells WSJM News a supplemental appropriation bill for the current 2018 fiscal year allows $15 million for competitive grants for schools to beef up security. Proos says the program will allow for some flexibility on a case by case basis.

“Everybody seems to do a little bit different as it related to school safety,” Proos said. “The grants will allow our school districts to ensure that they provide the very best public safety and school safety initiatives.”

The Senate bills also include $3 million to provide for a statewide school emergency notification system, and an additional $500,000 to promote Michigan’s OK2SAY hotline.
