Congressman Fred Upton has weighed in on the Trump administration’s new tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. In a statement issued Friday, Upton says, “We need to target tariffs to address specific unfair trading practices in a way that minimizes negative consequences for Michigan jobs, manufacturers, and consumers.” He goes on to say after speaking with local manufacturers and farmers, Upton has learned they believe a “trade war hurts Michigan.”

Below is Upton’s full statement.

“We need to target tariffs to address specific unfair trading practices in a way that minimizes negative consequences for Michigan jobs, manufacturers, and consumers. Our allies want certainty and here in Michigan so many of our jobs are based on exports. As I’ve listened to our local manufacturers, farmers, and job creators here in Southwest Michigan they agree: A trade war hurts Michigan. We must continue working in a bipartisan way to ensure we’re pursuing better options.”
