WSJM’s Ray Gustafson will be out at Woodland Terrace Senior Living in Niles from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Woodland Terrace Director Todd Dockerty tells WSJM News there is promising research into Alzheimer’s, but the fight is far from over.

“It is a fatal disease,” Dockerty said. “People do die from Alzheimer’s. It attacks the brain, and slowly your brain will give out.”

Dockerty tells us there are some myths about Alzheimer’s. For one, he says although most patients are elderly, he’s seen some as young as 58. Another myth has to do with causes of Alzheimer’s.

“Cooking with aluminum, using aluminum in anything, drinking out of containers that are aluminum, aspartame, silver dental fillings at one points,” Dockerty said.

Dockerty says there is no scientific evidence any of that causes Alzheimer’s. He advises everyone to know the warning signs. You can find out more about the big radiothon at Alz.org/TheLongestDay.
