As cleanup is ongoing in the western Upper Peninsula following massive flooding last month, federal help is coming. The Federal Highway Administration said Tuesday morning it will provide $2 million from the Emergency Relief program. Chris Bush is acting commanding officer of the State Emergency Management Homeland Security Division. He spoke with Michigan News Network about the quest to get federal disaster assistance.

“That’s part of the process of getting the next federal help that we’d be seeking,” Bush said.

State officials feel the damage warrants a federal disaster declaration by President Donald Trump. The $2 million in “quick release” funding will be used to restore essential traffic for local communities. Federal officials say this initial payment is considered a down payment on the costs of short-term repairs while the state continues damage assessments for long-term repairs.
