One ticket is complete in the governor’s race, as Republican Bill Schuette has named Kent County Clerk and Register of Deeds Lisa Posthumus Lyons as his running mate. He said several factors went into the choice.

“One was relationships. This is about relationships, right? Lisa and I have a strong relationship and have been friends for a long time,” said Schuette Wednesday morning in Grand Rapids. “Second is trust. You have to trust your lieutenant governor. “You have to have philosophical compatibility. Lisa is a true conservative in every way you want to describe it.”

For her part, Lyons said the decision to join the ticket came down to one made by her family. She says she loves serving at the county level in Kent County, but feels lieutenant governor may be the best place for her to serve. Lyons adds her family’s support is what helped her make up her mind.

Lyons served three terms in the state House before being elected clerk in Kent County in 2016. She is the daughter of Dick Posthumus, who was Governor John Engler’s lieutenant governor in his final term and is now the chief of staff for Governor Rick Snyder. Posthumus Lyons was a critic of President Trump during the 2016 campaign. It’s yet to be seen if that will impact the support of Schuette from the Trump administration.

Democratic nominee Gretchen Whitmer has not yet announced her running mate.
