Legislation to create a state mental health crisis hotline is being backed by state Representative Mary Whiteford. She tells us the Michigan Cares Hotline would connect people with professional services when they need help.

“That’s what this legislation is about,” Whiteford said. “Connecting and taking care of the people of Michigan who need it most, and I think it affects every single one of us in some way.”

Whiteford hopes the hotline could save lives.

“If we can get there when they first reach out for help, that very first cry for help, we may be able to stop all of the really bad things from happening for most people, and that is my hope.”

Whiteford says if the legislation is approved, Michigan will be the first state with such a hotline. She testified about it Wednesday before the House Health Policy Committee.
