Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad wants to continue the momentum started last week when an anti-crime initiative called Operation Mayberry was announced. The goal is to stop violence in the community, and at Monday’s city commission meeting, Muhammad invited one and all to a unity event set for this Thursday. He said “Stop the Killing, Start the Healing: a City of Benton Harbor Family Affair” will feature youth groups, poetry readings, and conversation on solutions.

“Other people will be coming from out of town to support and wrap their arms around the city of Benton Harbor, and hopefully all of the people coming together will be able to put our heads together to put forth solutions,” Muhammad said.

Muhammad said the event set for 7 p.m. this Thursday at Dwight P Mitchell City Center Park will feature youth groups, poetry, and more. Mayor Pro Tem Duane Seats said at Monday’s meeting an effort also needs to be made to address the root issues of violent crime.
