Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are continuing to try to reach an agreement on a new five-year Farm Bill. U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan is the Ranking Member of the Agriculture Committee and co-wrote the Senate version with Kansas Republican and chairman Pat Roberts.

“As usual, there are regional differences that come up,” said Stabenow. “Usually it’s less about partisanship and more about regions and commodities that are grown.”

Big differences still remain on conservation, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and other parts of the two Farm Bills which have passed the U.S. House and Senate. Stabenow says they’re not up against a hard deadline at the end of the month, despite that being when most commodity support programs are set to expire.

“We can pretty much continue the current bill and funding can continue until about December,” said Stabenow. She made her remarks during a teleconference during which she received the endorsements of the Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Agri-Business Association, and most of the state’s agriculture commodity groups.
