A new website has been launched by the Michigan Department of Treasury for residents to search for unclaimed property. Treasury’s Terry Stanton tells us the department receives unclaimed properties like dormant bank accounts, life insurance policies, stocks and bonds, and even safe deposit box contents. The state has held on to as much as $1 billion in unclaimed property over the years, and the new website makes finding those things easier.

“It does allow folks to have some enhanced search options, and also they can file a claim electronically and upload verifying documentation,” Stanton said.

You can enter your name and zip code to see if Treasury has anything that might be yours. On the site’s first day, 500 claims were submitted. The site is at Michigan.gov/UnclaimedProperty.
