An opioid overdose prevention training event is set for this month in Benton Harbor. This time organized between the Berrien County Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Voice Change Hope Alliance, it will be offered in the afternoon so more people can attend. The Suicide Prevention Coalition’s Trent Watford tells WSJM News opioid overdoses and suicide are often related.

“We fell like since there is that overlap between mental health problems, drug abuse, and suicide, we wanted to be involved in helping to get this training out there,” Watford said.

Watford says he has learned of drug overdoses that were intentional, and he thinks the training on the use of Naloxone could be of benefit to anyone who has a loved one that’s struggling. They’ll demonstrate how to administer the nasal spray to revive someone who’s overdosed, and also give away doses. Those who want to attend should RSVP.
