Berrien County has a new Chief Public Defender. The job opened up on August 3 with the resignation of Carl Macpherson, and Christopher Renna has been serving in that role in the interim. The county board Thursday voted to promote Renna to the post of Chief Public Defender on a permanent basis. WSJM News spoke to Renna about the mission of the office.

“We want to make that sure that no matter who you are, or what your background is or what you have in your bank account that you’re going to be represented fully and fairly,” said Renna.

Macpherson came on board in March 2016, three months after the county created the public defender position and announced his exit this summer.
