If voters approve, Michigan’s anti-gerrymandering ballot proposal 2 will take the power to determine legislative districts away from political parties. Instead voters – through a bipartisan commission that includes independents – will have that power.

Katie Fahey of Voters Not Politicians says the proposal makes it illegal for politicians behind closed doors to draw political districts to favor one political party over another. She wants voters to think about that as they decide how to vote.

“Do you want to continue the status quo where we know it’s rigged and people in those rooms aren’t looking out for communities, they’re looking out for their own interests? Or do you want to create a transparent process that makes it so we have compromise again and so that we’re just looking to just make sure that we have a system we can trust?”

Fahey says millions of dollars of attack ads against the anti-gerrymandering proposal were launched in the final two weeks of this campaign. So she says she’s proud Voters Not Politicians was also able to raise millions of dollars to fight back.

“Of course they don’t want to give up that power they have right now to pretty much rig elections. So our biggest job has been tryin’ to make sure that everybody knows what this is. And what’s really exciting is we have over fourteen thousand people from almost every single zip code of Michigan who have contributed to this campaign.”
