The city of St. Joseph will have a new ordinance next Thursday banning any businesses from opening up to sell, manufacture, or transport recreational marijuana now that Proposal 1 will be in place the same day. Mayor Pro Tem Laura Goos says the city commission passed the ordinance opting out as a precaution to wait for the state to implement the laws and rules governing the drug.

“We just want, as one of us put it, put a pin in it for now to understand what’s happening and what the regulations are going to be,” says Goos. “Then we can make a determination at a later time and look at the zoning and all the things we would need to do as a municipality.”

Goos says possession will be allowed with no problem next week.

“They can have personal usage here in the city in their homes, and that is not affected by this ordinance.”

Niles and Eau Claire are among the area communities which have also decided to opt out for the time being when it comes to allowing the businesses. Which means you can possess weed, but you’re going to have a hard time finding somewhere to legally get your hands on it.
