Congressman Fred Upton is hopeful another government shutdown can be averted. The deal last month that re-opened the federal government following its more than 30-day partial shutdown was intended to give Congress and the president three weeks to address border security. Upton tells WSJM News his Problem Solvers group had considered the possibility.

“We talked about this very scenario where we would have in essence a time out, bring people back to work, allow negotiators to go back at it,” Upton said.

Upton says the common ground here is the need for border security in general.

“I’m encouraged that at the end of the day when this process is over in the next week or two, we can get a deal that not only the president supports, but both sides, Republicans and Democrats, can support as well,” Upton said.

Upton says everyone has seen the damage that can be caused by a shutdown, and it shouldn’t be repeated. He also says there’s a legislative effort underway to prevent additional shutdowns by automatically renewing funding.
