The Michigan Department of Transportation has about $30 million in work planned for the Niles area in the next few years, and it wants the public to be well-informed and also have a chance to offer some input. That’s why the agency is holding an open house this Wednesday. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News they’re going to reconstruct the US-12 and M-51 interchange in 2023.

“2023 has three of the four components — the reconstruction of the interchange, repaving M-51…and reconstruction of US-12 from Third Street to M-51,” Schirripa said. “The fourth bit is happening this year, repaving M-51 from the state line to Chestnut Lane.”

Schirripa says well over 20,000 vehicles pass through that stretch of road per day, and MDOT wants everyone to know what’s coming. The open house will be Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Southwestern Michigan College’s campus in Niles. On hand will be MDOT staff who can answer questions and also take comments.
