GOP Leaders Give Response To State Of The State

Republican leaders in Lansing are responding to Governor Whitmer’s State of the State address. They did away with the traditional canned response immediately following the speech in favor of a press conference this morning instead. House Speaker Lee Chatfield says they were left wanting more.

“I believe last night there were some missed opportunities to talk about several issues that we in the House and Senate have identified as large challenges that are facing our state,” said Chatfield on Wednesday. “Chief among them is lowering the cost of car insurance as well as updating our criminal justice system.”

The northern Michigan Republican applauded the governor for keeping a consistent message with what she campaigned on in terms of building bridges and working across the aisle, “but it is important to note that the campaign trail has ended, and now it’s time to govern.”

Whitmer only briefly touched on auto insurance reform, and it was at the very end of her remarks. She laughed with Chatfield and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey that it took that topic to finally get them out of their seats for applause.
