Volunteer Advocates Sought For Sexual Assault Response Team

Advocate volunteers are needed by the Sexual Assault Response Team of Berrien County. Alyssa Pliml, a registered nurse with the program, tells WSJM News the team works with the survivors of sexual assault, and those who serve as advocate volunteers provide them support.

“Patients who have an advocate present are less likely to self-blame, they’re more likely to seek the assistance of law enforcement, and advocates can help them by referring them to support groups and therapists,” Pliml said.

Pliml says volunteers must complete a four-day training program with the next one beginning in early March. The deadline to apply is February 25. The Sexual Assault Response Team is made up of counselors, social workers, law enforcement, doctors, nurses, the Cora Lamping Center, and the Children’s Advocacy Center.
