President Trump has triggered bipartisan opposition in Congress by attempting to bypass lawmakers to fund his border wall. Congressmen Fred Upton and Dan Kildee both say that only Congress can spend money. Upton says to look for Congress to possibly try to block the order.

“The Constitution is pretty clear that Congress has the initial right to spend and tax,” says the St. Joseph Republican. Kildee is a Flint Democrat who says the President appears more motivated by personal politics than national security in this case.

“Being able to go to his base and say he didn’t fold rather than actually getting something done,” said Kildee.

Additionally, Michigan is joining with 15 other states in a lawsuit seeking to block President Trump’s national emergency declaration to secure money for a wall along the Mexican border. State Attorney General Dana Nessel called it a “fake emergency” and a “publicity stunt” in a statement, adding Trump’s actions will raid the federal budget. She adds there are concerns money will be diverted from the Michigan National Guard and Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. It’s not yet known where the President will try to scrounge up the money for the wall.
