Baroda residents will be able to receive free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms installed by the fire department this spring and summer. The department is partnering with the Michigan Bureau of Fire Services, State Fire Marshal and MI Prevention for the program.

Fire Chief Larry Klug says taking part in a risk production program like this is important. “This smoke alarm program has the potential to save lots of lives at no cost to our taxpayers,” Klug said in a statement. “While Baroda is already a very safe place to life, this will only help to make it better.”

Firefighters will also do a simple home safety assessment with residents after the devices are in place. A FEMA grant is paying for the initiative, and all residents of the Village of Baroda or Baroda Township need to do to take part is call the township office and answer a few questions. The Baroda Fire Department notes 63% of all fire deaths in Michigan last year involved people over the age of 40, and the program is aimed at reducing those deaths. The department has 216 smoke alarms and 36 carbon monoxide alarms on order, and the program will run until August 1.
