The University of Michigan is among six colleges competing to host a presidential debate during next year’s election season. Spokesman Rick Fitzgerald says there’s a chance students could even question the candidates if the university if chosen.

“We’ve seen that in other debates that have been hosted (by universities) that there are students who are able to engage in the process,” says Fitzgerald. “There are a lot of details to be worked out with the Commission on Presidential Debates, but we think it’s an exciting opportunity for our entire community.”

He says they sent a letter this week to the Commission on Presidential Debates to express interest in being chosen to host such an event. The price tag is estimated at around $2.5 million, which Fitzgerald says would be paid by private donors. A two-night Democratic presidential debate is set for July 30 and 31 in Detroit, with a location yet to be determined. Those will air on CNN.
