The resignation of the city’s former finance director has been rejected by Benton Harbor City Commissioners. At a Monday meeting, some commissioners indicated they never received the resignation letter of former Finance Director Andrew Clark. He stepped down in February, with The Herald Palladium reporting he had complaints about how city income tax payments were being handled. At Monday’s meeting, Commissioner Juanita Henry said the body should investigate.

“I’m ready to accept his resignation and to move on, but I do want to — he brought out a lot of issues and problems, and they do need to be fixed,” Henry said.

Mayor Marcus Muhammad said the search for a new finance director should begin, but Commissioner Mary Alice Adams said she wants to know more before proceeding.

“It disturbs me that he was run off,” Adams said. “I’ve got a problem with that, and I want to hear from Mr. Clark himself.”

The commission rejected the resignation, even though Clark hasn’t worked for the city since late February. Commissioners Sharon Henderson, Juanita Henry, and Edward Isom, along with Mayor Muhammad, were the yes votes on accepting the resignation.
