There will be a heavy police presence out on Michigan roads this Memorial Day weekend. Michigan State Police Lieutenant Jim Flegel tells WSJM News there are three separate safety initiatives underway. He says Memorial Day weekend isn’t the safest weekend on the roads.

“Unfortunately, last year there were 15 fatal crashes that resulted in 19 fatalities over the weekend,” Flegel said.

Underway this weekend are Operation CARE, the six-state “State Trooper Project,” and the Click It or Ticket campaign. Flegel says that last one is especially important.

“Unfortunately, when I review the fatal crashes over holiday weekends, in a good majority of those fatalities the people were not wearing their seat belts.”

Everyone is reminded to avoid aggressive driving, to wear their seat belts, to ditch distractions behind the wheel, and to never drive after drinking. The enhanced enforcement period starts Friday morning and runs through late Monday night.
