As leaders at Benton Harbor Area Schools work to arrange a turnaround plan with the state, they’re also hoping to undo the damage done by recent talk of the high school closing. At Tuesday’s board of education meeting, Interim Superintendent Patricia Robinson noted enrollment has dropped since the governor proposed closing Benton Harbor High School. She says her team has been reaching out to parents to let them know the school district is a safe place for their kids.

“We’re also pushing out the message that our district, Benton Harbor Area Schools, is stronger and is better when everybody is together in this,” Robinson said. “That’s the community, the parents, the teachers, the district leadership, and the school board.”

Robinson said she’s working to arrange a student fair for young people to learn more positive things about Benton Harbor Area Schools, although the date hasn’t yet been locked down. She also said staff are going to go around to various apartment complexes and other locations in town to try to attract enrollment.
