The Michigan Department of Transportation will close the eastbound I-94 ramp to Watervliet at M-140 on Monday, and it’s going to stay closed for about seven weeks. MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells WSJM News the closure is due to maintenance work planned on the I-94 bridge over M-140.

“It’s a $340,000 investment which includes joint replacement, deck sealing, rail replacement, and some approach work,” Schirripa said.

The goal is to keep the bridge in good condition. MDOT will maintain two lanes of eastbound highway travel while the bridge is worked on and use part of that ramp to make that possible. That’s why the ramp will have to be shut down.

“Because if people are traveling toward through at 45 or 60 miles per hour and somebody wants to get off on that ramp, they’ll have to virtually stand up on their brake pedal to make that corner because it’s a loop ramp.”

A detour will take drivers off exit 39 at Friday Road. From there, you’ll go on Red Arrow Highway into town. You can stay on top of all MDOT construction projects at Michigan.gov/Drive.
