Despite handing out “Upton 2020” buttons over the weekend at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference on Mackinac Island, Congressman Fred Upton isn’t saying for sure that he’s seeking an 18th term. However, he says he’s “certainly on that path.” Speaking on Michigan’s Big Show, the St. Joseph Republican says there’s a long time between now and the election in November 2020.

“Even when I thought about running for the U.S. Senate a couple of different cycles, we didn’t make a decision until later in the year,” he explained. “It’s just family first, job second, campaign third. Fourteen months out is a long ways.”

Upton is the dean of the Michigan congressional delegation, and is in the top 20 for seniority in the entire U.S. House. Democratic state Senator Jon Hoadley of Kalamazoo is already campaigning to try to unseat the 17-term incumbent from St. Joseph.
